   I like the looks of the Cuisinart CPT-640 with its simple controls and lack of complex functions that might limit the longevity of the unit. The problem starts when you first handle it and realize it has a tactile feel that is just as bad as the most economical models. The next major problem with the CPT-640 is that the heating wire is only wound approximately 8 1/2 times (see photo), not the more densely wound 14 times of the better models. Fewer winds of the heating wire mean it toasts slower and less evenly. It makes sense that it is also a way to lower manufacturing costs. I would guess Cuisinart will defend their use of less heating wire by saying it is lower wattage and is therefore more efficient. I’m all for efficiency but efficiency for who? There is an expense to be paid for less wire and that is the consumer’s time in the kitchen. One piece of Sourdough took 2 minutes and 21 seconds, and as the photo shows, it wasn’t toasted very dark nor evenly. A budget $25 model will toast just as even and fast, if not faster and more evenly than the Cuisinart CPT-640. Bottom line, if you’re looking for a better than average toaster, this is definitely not it. Because it looks good and does make toast (albeit unevenly) I gave it two stars.

   I really like that this toaster has many functions to toast a variety of breads and pastries and I really like that it has 4 slots. I like how it heats and toasts. The only thing that I don’t like is that sometimes the lever springs back up when I press it down, but I think maybe I just haven’t mastered all the settings yet. There is a cancel button and I think you have to press it when you want to change the bread type on the dial so that the lever will stay down.

   so the push handle to start toasting broke off and cannot be placed back on as the 2 arms broke off. Is there any appliance that will last more than 2 years? for $60.00 i would have thought that the handle would have been one piece so not to break off. It is only me so it was not abused daily.

    Bought this to replace the Breville “A bit more” It’s okay. I’m noticing that one side of the toast is browning more than the other. It seems a little more cheaply made than the Breville ,but that’s probably why it costs less. I miss the bit more feature of the Breville and wish it had a light to show it’s on. It’s adequate but for a Cuisinart product of which I have a few,was a little disappointing.

    I purchased this toaster to match my appliances. They style is perfect, however it’s performance is horrendous. Note picture, does not toast both sides of bread evenly. I did it twice to be sure. How companies sell products this bad is amazing. I will never buy another Cuisinart product if this is their new quality. Sad!

    Seems good so far. I don’t think we will get 25 years out of it like the last one. Stylish looking. Nice variety of toasting options, but it seems like they all do the same thing. Will need to redo it if you want it well done.

    UPDATE 10 months after purchase: The knob for the level for pushing down the toast broke off. Cuisinart does not offer that part on their repair parts site, and doesn’t look like there is a third-party replacement available. DO NOT BUY unless you have a 3D printer to print yourself a new knob! Original review: We’ve owned a lot of toasters over the years, and it has been hard to find a toaster that toasts evenly. Some of them did okay with typical mass-market sandwich bread, but most specialty breads would not toast evenly. This toasts nice and even; tested on several brands and types of bread. The lift handle and darkness slide lever are nice and solid. “Defrost” and “Single Slice” buttons work well. A couple minor usability issues. But the nice toast makes up for them: If you have the toaster aligned with the long side going from the counter backsplash to the front, the crumb tray is against the backsplash, making you have to twist the toaster around temporarily to empty the tray. See photo showing our setup The “Bagel” setting toasts just the inside surface of a sliced bagel (nice), but the little guidance image on top of the toaster is hard to decipher which is the inside of the bagel. Not only that, but if you slice a bagel, and immediately put it in the toaster, you have to swap sides!

    Very attractive, like the fact that you can raise the toasted item high enough to retrieve it without risking electrocution. Seems to toast more evenly than my 20 year old toastmaster which finally died. Did a pretty nice job on an english muffin, however you need to be aware of the different settings and heat levels for best results on the variety of items you can toast in it. Bet it doesn’t outlive the Toastmaster’s lifespan, but still seems like a pretty reasonable price for a stainless clad, good performing toaster.
